Pirates in the post-revolutionary Czech airwaves: A case study of Radio Podzemí

The thesis "Pirates in the post-revolutionary Czech airwaves: a case study of Radio Podzemí" deals with the six-month-long broadcast of Radio Podzemí from České Budějovice, one of the first pirate stations in Czechoslovakia. The aim of the work is to introduce the period of the station's broadcasting, to place it in the historical context of the post-revolutionary airwaves and to illustrate the concepts of alternative media. Emphasis is then placed on aspects of community and pirate media, as well as the transformation of the medium from pirate to commercial radio. The qualitative research uses in-depth interviews with several founding members to collect data. The data collected is analysed using the grounded theory method. During its existence, Radio Podzemí exhibited a combination of elements of pirate, community and commercial media. The station's early broadcasts illustrated the strong anti-system motivation that is characteristic of pirate media. As time progressed, the station became dominated by elements and values of community media, eventually to be fully replaced by the station's commercial management. The contribution of this thesis is to complement the historical and media research that has been devoted to Radio Podzemí to date.

Radio broadcasting as a community tool of urban subcultur

This diploma thesis aims to describe and explain the phenomenon of the community radio broadcasting. Despite the fact, that this sector has not been implemented in the Czech media system to supplement the dual system of public and private stations, broadcasting of this type does exist. As a subject of my case study I chose the internet radio StreetCulture as I consider it to be a unique example within the Czech media market. StreetCulture proves its specificity with a very wide range of contents. It acts as a platform for a large number of different communities and it also interconnects the participants within the public space StreetBar. The analytical part of the thesis investigates how this radio station fulfils four basic dimensions of community media as defined by the media theorist Nico Carpentier: community aspect, alternative aspect, civil aspect and rhizomatic aspect. For each of these specifics I tried to demonstrate how it relates to the StreetCulture radio station concerning both the organization and content of the broadcast and how it is reflected in various non-broadcasting activities of StreetCulture. Foreign Broadcasting Department of Former Československý rozhlas (the Czechoslovakian Radio) in the 60th.

The Rigorous thesis Foreign Broadcast Department of the Former the Czechoslovak Radio in the 1960s describes the operation of an important part of the key broadcasting institution in the former Czechoslovakia. The text includes biographies of journalists working in the department as well as of its chief editors and the Czechoslovak Radio directors. It also deals with the activities of Milan Weiner, the key chief editor of the Foreign Department who led the team in 1963-1967. A description of an important period, the so-called Prague Spring, in 1968 is also included. The text also describes the period of the so-called Normalisation in former Czechoslovakia. It contains an overview of the political and social situation in the former Czechoslovakia in the second half of the twentieth century and its reflection in the overall operation of the former Czechoslovak Radio.

This bachelor thesis focuses on Radio 1, its history, its programming format and specific language devices used by the presenters. The aim of the thesis is to identify and describe distinctive features of broadcast, which create "the identity" of Radio 1. The broadcasting scheme is not based on a previously scheduled playlist, as the presenters define the choice of music themselves. Their manners of moderating are essential for the analytical part of this thesis. In the first chapter of the analysis, the deviation from the Czech language standard is noted. The second chapter compares two programmes (Odvážné Palce - Radio 1 and Čelisti - ČRo 4 - Radio Wave) from three perspectives: the structure of content, language devices of the presenters and interpretations of the programme. Both radio station share similar programming format and both programmes are of the same genre and focus on the same theme. The conclusion presents the summary of distinctive features, which contribute to create "the identity" of Radio 1.

Transformation of Radio Freen Europe after 1989 with regard to the work of Mrs. Kamila Moučková (case study)

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to outline to a potential reader the work of Mrs. Kamila Moučková in Radio Free Europe. It is desirable that the reader can create a comprehensive view of the issue. For this reason, the bachelor's thesis contains a chapter describing in detail the life story of Mrs. Kamila Moučková. At the same time, the work describes the origin and development of Radio Free Europe. Attention is focused mainly on the activities of the Czechoslovak and subsequently the Czech editorial office of Radio Free Europe. Due to the fact that Mrs. Moučková joined the editorial office of Free Europe only in the post- revolutionary period, it is necessary to describe the transformation of the station in the period in question. The work was processed mainly by the method of analysis of professional literature and by interviewing former colleagues Mrs. Moučková from Radio Free Europe. Namely Mr. Radko Kubička and Mr. Petr Hartman. Mrs. Moučková worked at Radio Free Europe for almost the entire period of the Czech newsroom's existence. Mrs. Moučková participated mainly in the program Události a názory. In her case, the practical creation of one of the programs of this iconic radio station in the later phase of its existence can be shown.

Radio broadcasting of the Czechoslovak government in exile and its instrumentalisation of the Holocaust in 1939-1945

My master's thesis, entitled "The Radio Broadcasting of the Czechoslovakian Government-in- Exile and instrumentalization of the Holocaust in 1939-1945" explores the instrumentalization of the Holocaust when it comes to radio broadcasting by the Czechoslovakian government-in- exile in London during World War II. My thesis deals with exile governments and the development of the Czechoslovakian government-in-exile in London until its recognition by world powers. The text also rests on the operation and formation of radio broadcasts, as well as on the use of propaganda during World War II. The most important part of this thesis is chapter four, where I examine the radio broadcasts of politicians-in-exile on the Holocaust. It is here that I scrutinize primary sources ascertained from the Czech Radio Archive. In conclusion, I summarize the answers to the research questions asked.

The Differences between Public and Commercial Radio Broadcasting (exemplified by Radiožurnál and Rádio Impuls)

Diploma thesis The Differences between Public and Commercial Radio Broadcasting (exemplified by Radiožurnál and Rádio Impuls) deals with differences in broadcasting of public radio station Radiožurnál and commercial radio station Rádio Impuls. The selection of stations was not random. Radiožurnál stays according to Radioprojekt, official radio audience research realized by companies MEDIAN and STEM/MARK, the longterm most listened radio station of Czech Radio and belong to most listened radio station countrywide. Rádio Impuls is since the begining of this research most listened radio station countrywide. Diploma thesis does not examine general differences in radio broadcasting between these two radio stations which are valid for another radio stations of Czech Radio and for other commercial radio stations. Instead of this it deals with specific differences in their radio broadcasting. After introductory inclusion of examined radio stations to media system in the Czech Republic, description of their origin and current format, other chapters focus on individual differences. Attention is dedicated to programs, news, moderators' inputs and two publicistic programs - Ranní interview and Tři Impulsy na tělo. Last chapter evaluates audio, lexical, morphological and syntactical level of moderators'speeches.

Radio Broadcasting for the German Minority in the Czech lands until 1945 with an emphasis of the Mělník Brodcast Transmitter

The thesis Radio Broadcasting for the German Minority in the Czech Countries until the Year 1945, with the Example of the Melnik Broadcast Transmitter describes the radio broadcasting for the German people living in Bohemia and Moravia in the period from its formation until the year 1945. It concentrates on the radio broadcaster in Melnik that was built in 1938 with the purpose of giving a special broadcasting to the German minority living in the Czech countries. The analytical part is divided into three sections: broadcasting for the Germans in the First and Second Republic and Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Another chapter focuses on the broadcasting from The Soviet Union (especially on the broadcaster Sudetendeutscher Freiheitssender) and Great Britain. It focuses on the contrasting access to the radio broadcasting for this group from the side of the Czech political representation and from the side of the German state. In the Czechoslovakia, there was this broadcasting in hands of the private institution Urania. The Sudeten Germans have focused their attention to the German stations, which were offering them more popular program. Radio Stalin as an example of the Czech pirate radio

Diploma thesis "Radio Stalin as an example of Czech piracy radio broadcast" is aimed to complexly present radio station Radio Stalin which was broadcasting in October 1990 in Prague. Radio Stalin is presented in the context of events of that time and related changes in politics, economy, society and media and in the context of piracy radio broadcast. First of all the emphasis is put on media transformation and changes in legislative framework of radio broadcasting after 1989. Radio Stalin is described through the method of oral history when interviews were held with its several cofounders. This method was chosen because of absence or unavailability of other sources. However, press is used partly. In this thesis is created overall picture of Radio Stalin. It is possible to imagine the situation and conditions in which was this radio created, the period before the start of broadcasting, the broadcasting process, the end of its broadcasting and the continuation of it. The benefit of thesis is the reminder of this often neglected radio which has its own place in the history of Czech radio broadcasting.
